WHAT IS THE SEARCH FOR THE LOST DUTCHMAN’S GOLD MINE?
The Lost Dutchman is a table-top simulation activity, based on the legend of the “Lost Dutchman’s Gold Mine” in the Superstition Mountains of Arizona. The challenge requires teams to absorb and analyze information, identify problems, making choices regarding collaboration and evaluating the consequences of their decisions. Lost Dutchman focuses on the ethical responsibility of considering the well being of others along the way to reaching a goal.
WHAT IS SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING (SEL)?
Social and emotional learning is a framework that, when adopted by schools, communities and more, can help deliver the crucial social and emotional skills that students need to develop while in school. We can compliment this character development, and support students’ social and emotional growth. CASEL, an organization that has compiled the research and resources for students, parents and teachers alike, have put forth a framework that details five important competencies and skills for students to develop. Lost Dutchman focuses on one of these competencies in particular: Responsible Decision-Making
HOW DOES LOST DUTCHMAN WORK?
Our professional, experienced facilitators come to your school to lead the program, bringing all equipment with them. This initiative has several room requirements. Your group will be divided into groups of about six. Each group will be seated at a round table with a minimum 5 ft. diameter. Much of the presentation requires a working projector. Lost Dutchman is designed for groups of 10 to 100, and takes 1-2 hours. The cost is $20 per person, with minimum charge of $400.
As groups work through this challenge, we focus on the group’s ability to make responsible decisions while having to synthesize large amounts of information in a time-constrained environment. During and after the activity, groups will have the opportunity to reflect on their experience in order to learn about their own abilities to handle stress, and the group’s ability to persevere through complex challenges.

Lost Dutchman is an involved activity that is great for groups who are ready to consider the needs of their team. Teams are faced with the challenge of balancing individual needs, with the needs of others in the group.
