WHAT IS CONQUEST?

The CONQUEST Program is similar to our Common Ground Program, in that it involves a variety of team-building problem-solving challenges. The difference being that the CONQUEST program also follows a fast-paced, competition-styled format, where individuals track scores using a point system from one activity to the next. Each activity will involve breaking the larger group into smaller groups. Between problem-solving challenges, the teams will be mixed up. One of the great benefits of this program (similar to the Common Ground program) is that it gives participants a chance to interact with and make connections with LOTS of the faces in the room.

Although the program leans on our competitive nature as people, the underlying approach is that throughout the experience there will be several slower and thoughtful moments where the group will be invited to reflect on the skills involved with solving the problems in front of them, and the traits necessary for achieving a high score (which is a balance of performance, and also in doing everything possible to make your current team the best that it can be).

The exercises and initiatives involved will require a changing combination of creativity, problem-solving, leadership and full group participation. The exercise “categories” are hard to describe - but will involve building initiatives, timed initiatives, scoring/point-based initiatives, etc… They are all GROUP oriented problems to solve, and will require the group to work together and leverage the strengths of their teammates.

WHAT IS SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING (SEL)?

Social and emotional learning is a framework that, when adopted by schools, communities and more, can help deliver the crucial social and emotional skills that students need to develop while in school. We can compliment this character development, and support students’ social and emotional growth. CASEL, an organization that has compiled the research and resources for students, parents and teachers alike, have put forth a framework that details five important competencies and skills for students to develop.

Conquest focuses on two of these competencies: Relationship Skills and Social Awareness

WHO BENEFITS FROM CONQUEST?

The differentiating factor with the Conquest program is how fast-paced it is. This program is great for groups where it is important to vary the content for the group, and keep attention by moving quickly from one activity to the next. It is also really designed for larger groups to participate in together. Because of the nature of breaking into smaller groups - a minimum of 15 or 20 people is really necessary. Because of the nature of the program, being broken into smaller group teambuilding activity, it does require that the participants have a competent level of attention span, and ability to stay on task with the activity-at-hand. Because of this - it is BEST for high-school-aged students and older.

We will have at least one or several facilitators involved and leading the group through the exercises, but we will need additional support from group leaders, or chaperones in order to keep the momentum of the group on the exercises involved.

HOW DOES CONQUEST WORK?

First, we work with your group’s coordinator to select the program that best fits your number of participants, your goals and the time you have available. Conquest programs typically run about 2 to 2.5 hours, and typical rate is $25 per person, with a $500 minimum.

On the day of the program, your group will be split into small groups of 5 - 10 students, depending on the activity. They will participate in the activities presented, which will last between 10 - 20 minutes per activity (some are simpler and quicker, while others are more involved, and take a bit longer).
Participants will keep their individual scores, and there will be moments to pause, tally scores, and discuss what they are noticing about their group and teamwork through the program and reflect one final time at the end.
