WHAT IS WATER WORX?
The Water Worx Program challenges groups to trust each other, strategize together and achieve more than they ever thought possible.
This program is different than some of our other programs because it is essentially ONE large problem-solving exercise, divided into 3 phases!
Phase 1 - Build Phase (experiment and build a water transport system according to specific parameters).
Phase 2 - Individual Time Trial (individuals run the system alone)
Phase 3 - Team Challenge (full team uses their built system to achieve a final solution)
Our facilitators, utilizing 40+ years of wisdom, guide groups through the program. Each program is guided by our Experience. Learn. Grow. Change. methodology, which allows for unique opportunities that provide learning for your students.
WHAT IS SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING (SEL)?
Social and emotional learning is a framework that, when adopted by schools, communities and more, can help deliver the crucial social and emotional skills that students need to develop while in school. We can compliment this character development, and support students’ social and emotional growth. CASEL, an organization that has compiled the research and resources for students, parents and teachers alike, have put forth a framework that details five important competencies and skills for students to develop.
Water Worx focuses on two of these competencies: Relationship Skills and Responsible Decision-Making.

WHO BENEFITS FROM WATER WORX?
Many groups have utilized the Water Worx program since its inception about 10 years ago!
School groups value Water Worx for its connection to the STEAM fields. Being that it involves designing, building and testing a water transportation system, it is a very engineering specific exercise for groups. While we do not spend too much time on the science behind the exercise, students seem to have a natural interest in working with their hands, and using their creativity to complete their project.
This program has been helpful and used with a variety of groups, including:
University of Mary Washington Resident Assistant Team
L.C. Bird High School - Engineering Specialty Center - 9th Grade
Virginia Tech Talent Search Program
Oak Knoll Middle School Engineering Class
Movement Church - Youth Programs
St. Michael’s Episcopal School - 8th Grade
HOW DOES WATER WORX HAPPEN?
First, we work with your group’s coordinator to select the program that best fits your number of participants, your goals and the time you have available. Water Worx programs typically run about 2.5 to 3 hours, and typical rate is $40 per person.
On the day of the program, your group will be split into teams of 5 to 7 students. Then, the facilitator leading the exercise will take the group through the three phases of the challenge, where students will be in the same group for a majority of the time together. By the end of the experience, participants will have discovered new ways to communicate, collaborate and support each other. Along with the perk of learning about the group, students will also discover the character skills to identify and manage their emotions while under time stress.
